Portuguese Nationality – GOA, DAMAN, DIU.

 

Citizens born in the former Portuguese territories of Goa, Daman, Diu, Dadra, Nagar Haveli are Portuguese citizens, including their descendants (children, grandchildren, etc.). Under Law No. 2098 of July 29, 1959, the Portuguese born in India prior to their integration within the Indian Union data are ipso iure Portuguese citizens. Portugal is part of the European Union, this way the Portuguese citizen can enter in the 28 Member States of the European Union without any visa.


STEP 1: DOCUMENTS REQUIRED For those born in Goa before 18th December 1961 :

  • Birth certificate and Marriage certificate (if applicable) issued by the Conservatória do Registo Civil de Goa, Damão, Diu e Dadrá e Nagar Avelí.

 

  • Applicant parents marriage or
  • Applicant parents birth
  • Death certificate if any of parent is deceased all issued by Conservatória do Registo Civil de Goa, Damão, Diu e Dadrá e Nagar Aveli.
  • Any old document issued by Portuguese administration (paraviagem , bilhete de identidade , school document).
  • Legal Identification Documents (current passport). If submitted in Goa: valid Indian Passport or identity certificate with attached photograph issued by Mamlatdar/Sarpanch. Other identity cards can include a ration card or a voter identity card or a driving license.
  • Certificate of Residency with full address and photograph.
  • Certificate of Residency indicating residency between January 1974 and December 1975.
  • Power of attorney to lawyer

STEP 2- REGISTRATION OF MARRIAGE :

After registration BIRTH OF PERSON BORN BEFORE 1961 NEED  TO REGISTER MARRIAGE .

 

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED :

  • Marriage certificate
  • Birth of foreigh spouse
  • Power of attorney to lawyer

 

 

STEP 3- FOR THOSE BORN AFTER 1961:

It will be necessary to prove that their parents were born in Goa  and they marriage was register in Portugal ( NEED TO FULFILL STEP 1 AND STEP 2)

DOCUMENTS NEED :

  • Legal Identification Documents (current passport) valid Indian Passport or identity certificate with attached photograph issued by Mamlatdar/Sarpanch. Other identity cards can include a ration card or a voter identity card or a driving license (adacar or election card).
  • Birth certificate ( online if possible as well )
  • Parent assent birth and marriage ( step1 and step2 )

Rights and obligations of Portuguese citizens:

  • Portuguese citizens who meet the above criteria are also citizens of the European Union and thus enjoy rights of free movement all over the continent and also have rights to vote in elections for the European Parliament.
  • Able to vote in political elections upon reaching the age of 18.
  • Prevented from getting deported from Portugal or any country in Europe.
  • The right to live, work and retire in any member state of the European Union, for unlimited period.
  • Make family reunion

We also extend help in renewal and rectification of Indian passports.

 

OTHER REQUIMENT:

  • All documents issued in Goa need to be apostille in Delhi or Portuguese Consulate in India.
